Advanced Magic Schools
Beyond the familiar schools lies a second map of magic: direct work with Time, pure Function and pure Memory, rare multi-element structures, and “absence schools” that operate by removing part of the Great Cycle itself.
Beyond the Familiar Matrix
The common schools describe the ways most human institutions have learned to touch the Great Cycle without immediately tearing it apart. The advanced matrix begins where those stable traditions stop. Its first additions are deceptively simple: Time by itself, Function without gold or contract, and Memory without dream, theft or illusion. Time magic works with tempo, delay and local causality - a wound can be rolled back, a room caught in a loop, an attack made to arrive later than it was struck. Pure Function magic fixes a role without requiring greed or currency: a door is made to be protection, a sword to be an oath, a guard to be an order. Pure Memory seals facts, routes and traces without entering the more invasive territory of oneiric identity theft.
From there the system becomes combinatorial. Body plus Function turns flesh into assigned equipment: living armor, organ-keys and biomechanical prostheses. Time plus Function makes duration itself an obligation - live until dawn, die at the third blow, do not age until a debt is paid. Time plus Memory produces Echo magic, preserving a moment strongly enough to replay a crime, reconstruct a battle or train against a past event. Time plus Soul opens the dangerous logic of Return, in which a soul is drawn back toward a particular moment before it disappears into the Nothing. Other pairings place Soul into the body, into Memory or into Function, creating oath-bodies, borrowed destinies and punishments whose guarantee is the indestructible remainder of a person.
The rarest human techniques are triple structures. Node magic combines Body, Time and Function to rewrite the local rules of a room, fortress or district without possessing the full Separation Machine. Reality Writing joins Memory, Function and Will: something is written as how the world must be, and reality obeys for as long as sufficient Will can hold the text. Created magic assembles Body, Memory and Function into servants or soldiers that can act convincingly without possessing a Soul. These are not merely stronger spells. They approach the engineering logic of the old world, where the distinction between a law, a machine and a living role was much thinner.
Most disturbing are the absence schools. Instead of adding elements, they remove participation: no Time, no Memory, no Function, no Will or no Soul. Stasis, erased pasts, objects stripped of purpose, mass obedience and final spiritual sterilization all belong to this negative grammar. The source treats these practices as especially useful for bosses, prisons, inquisitorial extremes and fragments of the Machine because subtraction can be more absolute than ordinary enchantment. Advanced magic is therefore not a ladder above the common schools. It is the point where spellcraft begins to resemble surgery on the Cycle itself.
