Boss Hierarchy
Aurelion's threat tiers are a descent into older reality. Low bosses are curses, accidents and predators; true Lords are unique failures of the Great Cycle, preserved in sarcophagi because killing them was never the same as solving them.
A Ladder Into Older Reality
The source warns that the world of monsters is not really a ladder but a road leading downward. The first tiers can still be understood in human terms: an undead aristocrat, an alchemical accident, a cursed knight, a predatory artifact. As the hierarchy deepens, the categories change. C-tier beings can become regional elemental disasters. B and B+ move from “monster” toward legend and reality distortion. A and A+ are Lords of eras - powers whose existence can organize armies and alter the fate of civilizations. S is not a normal boss tier at all but the present balance between Fairy and Dark Lord; S+ belongs to the Primordial Three, architects of the conditions in which all lower threats exist.
The deeper reason is ontological. Lords are not species, divine pets or simply overgrown monsters. The source describes them as compensating forces produced when elven Harmony and dwarven Structure made the old world too stable. They are “anti-harmony” without being the Great Nothing itself: unique concentrations in which several elements of the Great Cycle are absent, fused, inverted or externalized. A race is a repeatable template. A Lord is a one-time formula. It has no ordinary population, no culture of lesser specimens and no reliable path of reproduction.
This is why the old world sealed rather than defeated them. Sarcophagi are conservation systems built through the Separation Machine: they fix a Lord's Function, isolate it from personal Time, reduce its radiation and prevent distortion from leaking into the world. When a Lord awakens in the human era it is immediately attacked by the very conditions that make humanity possible. Dionysian personal Time washes away absolute Function. The Lord loses scale and coherence, yet even a fraction of its former state is still catastrophic by human standards.
The hierarchy is therefore also a history of risk. The Dark Lord seeks sarcophagi because awakening a Lord can crack an era. If the awakened being survives, the source says the age may end; if hunters kill it, released harmonized potential strengthens the Fairy Queen and advances the Last Ritual. A boss fight at high tier is not merely a difficult combat encounter. It is an intervention in the balance between two apocalypses. The deeper the tier, the less meaningful it becomes to ask only “how strong is it?” The better question is “what part of reality must change for this thing to be possible?”
