Core Terms
Aurelion's vocabulary is operational. Words such as Will, Function, the Edge, White Flame or Golden Curse do not merely label phenomena; they tell the reader what a thing can do, what it costs and which part of reality it disturbs.
Words That Behave Like Laws
Aurelion needs a controlled vocabulary because ordinary fantasy words are too imprecise for its metaphysics. Time can mean a cosmic dimension, personal continuity or a locally suspended process. Memory can mean recollection, identity or a substrate that persists after its carrier disappears. Function can be a mundane job or an ontological role strong enough to bind a creature, institution or place. Will is not the same as desire: it is the capacity to act otherwise than the Function assigned to you. Soul is not a generic spirit. It is the remainder of Will that has been genuinely exercised.
The same precision governs boundaries. The Great Nothing is primordial non-being, not simply darkness. The Beyond is not a neighboring country of ghosts but a condition outside ordinary reality and the Great Cycle. The Edge is the unstable boundary where that condition begins. Transcendent entities are classified by their displacement from the ordinary chain of Body, Time, Memory and Function; the term says nothing about moral or spiritual superiority. Lords are likewise an ontological class - fixed balancing forces with absolute Function - and should not be confused with political lords.
Institutions and processes also require fixed terms because their names encode mechanisms. Golden Blood is a specific transmutation triggered by greed. The Golden Order is the system that turns gold into economy, doctrine and ritual power. The Golden Curse is the deformation produced when golden logic saturates a person or environment. White Flame is an anti-magical technology and doctrine of suppression, while the White Ash Inquisition is the institution that applies it. The Separation Node is a surviving central concentration of the broader Separation Machine. The Last Ritual is the Fairy Queen's attempt to rewrite the divine Tablets, not simply a final battle.
This page therefore functions less like a dictionary of synonyms than like a set of rules for reading the Codex. When the terminology is used strictly, relationships become visible: Memory can be stolen without being Soul; Function can survive after Body is gone; a being can be conscious without being fully free; a miracle can be powerful without being alive. In Aurelion, naming a phenomenon correctly is often the first step toward understanding what price it is already collecting.
