The Five Human Eras
Human history in Aurelion begins only when time becomes countable. Its five eras are not simple dynasties but successive answers to freedom, magic, gold, suppression and the possibility of rewriting the world.
History Begins With Choice
Aurelion does not place human history directly after the gods as though one calendar simply followed another. Before humanity, time belongs to mythic states: Harmony, Structure and the Dionysian fracture. After the Node Catastrophe lies the Dark Interval, which cannot be dated in ordinary terms. Only with a multiplicity of human consciousness does time become something that can be counted from one reign, disaster or generation to the next. That change is the true beginning of the human chronicle.
The First Era, remembered through Grey Lords and Green Druids, belongs to a world still close to the wreckage of the older orders. Humans are new, personal time is unstable, and the earliest forms of undead or time-avoidance appear beside attempts to excavate elven harmony, dwarven structure and dragon power. The druids are less inventors of magic than archaeologists of it. Their departure into the mist closes an age in which the ruins still seemed interpretable.
The Second Era of the Red Kings expands the map and the appetite of human power. Peoples meet nonhumans, storm cultures and new schools of magic emerge, and tyrant mages use the Separation Node for experiments with souls and transplanted consciousness. The era ends in the Red Night: massacre, destroyed archives and a historical wound large enough that later authorities cannot agree on what was erased. The Third Era answers freedom in a subtler way. Magic becomes pervasive, but the Golden Order begins reducing choice by translating life into value. Goblins, ratfolk and Separated spirits belong to this overheating of magic and appetite; the Machine itself starts to move again.
The Fourth Era of the White Kings is a reaction against that saturation. White Flame, anti-magic and political discipline attempt to arrest the process, yet magic is already woven into reality. Vampires appear, undead forms stabilize, and Gildglade survives inside concealment while its old nobility disappears. The Fifth Era - the Turning - has no clean boundary because it is happening as the record is written. The Machine is active, the Fairy Queen returns incompletely, the Dark Lord exists as her counter-form, and the world reaches the first moment in which history may not merely continue. It may be edited.
