Gold Magic
Gold magic treats value as a Function of reality. In Gildglade, coin can substitute for ingredients, sustain several workings at once and turn desire into an operational resource - but the more perfectly a mage counts the world, the more the world begins counting through the mage.
When Value Becomes Function
Gold magic is not the art of throwing metal at an enemy. Its element in the Great Cycle is Function: purpose, role, exchange and the rule that one thing can be made to stand in for another. In Gildglade that principle becomes literal because monster blood can be converted into gold and the city has built an entire ritual economy around the result. Gold is simultaneously payment, magical fuel, ritual resource and political language. A gold mage learns to exploit the same equivalence at the scale of spells.
The school works through artifacts of the Fairy tradition - Golden Beans, chains, seals and the Book of Expenses - and through monetary rites that let pure gold replace ingredients that would otherwise require rare material or knowledge. The source describes this as a way to "buy" Function. A caster can feed several spells with coin and hold them in parallel, not because the mage has suddenly gained greater talent, but because gold performs some of the functional labor that the caster would normally have to maintain personally. In its strongest urban form, this makes a middling practitioner look unnaturally capable.
The same shortcut explains the corruption. Gold does not merely obey the caster; Function begins to overwrite the person. The source describes experienced gold-workers as "counting machines" of other people's desires: speech becomes formulaic, hands move to the rhythm of trade, and the logic of price starts to govern the body. Gold magic also feeds the larger machinery of Gildglade. Its rituals accelerate the Last Ritual and can increase local distortions - the city becoming too willing to behave like a transaction, a stage or an account rather than ordinary stone and street.
Distance matters. The school is strongest in Gildglade, near the Separation Node, treasuries and accumulated gold; away from those anchors its practical strength falls sharply. This makes gold magic an unusually civic school. It thrives where a population already agrees that value can command reality. Its great temptation is therefore not greed in the simple moral sense. The temptation is to believe that because everything can be priced, everything can be replaced.
