The Great Cycle
Aurelion does not define life by heartbeat. It asks whether personal Time passes through a Body, whether that passage leaves Memory, whether Function can become Will, and whether exercised Will leaves a Soul.
How a Being Becomes Someone
The Great Cycle is the grammar by which Aurelion distinguishes life from imitation, death from suspension and consciousness from mere function. Its basic sequence is written as Time -> Body -> Memory -> Function/Will -> Soul. The arrows matter more than the nouns. A body is not alive merely because it moves; it is alive when personal Time passes through it, altering it irreversibly. Those alterations become Memory. Memory gives continuity and allows a being to occupy a Function - a role, pattern or purpose that can persist from one moment to the next.
Will appears when Function ceases to be absolute. A guard who can only guard has a function. A guard who can abandon the gate, betray the order, forgive an enemy or remain at the post despite every reason to flee has entered the territory of Will. The world bible treats Soul not as a preinstalled spark but as the irreducible remainder produced when genuine Will is actually exercised. In its most severe formulation, Soul is what is left when every other element of existence has been reduced to zero.
This makes Aurelion's peoples ontological categories as much as biological ones. The living possess Body and continuous personal Time. The undead replace Time with a surrogate - ritual, memory, machinery, gold or another sustaining mechanism. Half-living beings lose or substitute parts of the chain only under certain conditions. Mutants are often cases in which Function conflicts with Body. Transcendent entities have several links broken, fused, inverted or displaced outside the ordinary cycle. A lich may remember and act without living Time; an ancient spirit may possess Memory without a body; a Lord can persist as absolute Function while lacking Will entirely.
The Separation Machine was built for the pre-human version of this world. It can fix a Body, suspend Time, store Memory and redistribute Function because those are stable components. It cannot manufacture Will, and it cannot create Soul. Dionysus changed the problem by making Time personal and therefore making choice possible. From that moment, reality acquired a remainder the Machine could neither calculate nor balance away. The Great Cycle is therefore not only a taxonomy of creatures. It is the reason human freedom is the one variable capable of changing the ending.
