V Era: The Turning
The Fifth Era is not defined by a settled dynasty but by a threshold: the Separation Machine is active, souls have reached critical mass, the Fairy Queen has returned incompletely, and the world can for the first time be rewritten from inside history.
The World Becomes Editable
The Fifth Era is difficult to date because it is less a reign than a condition. The source calls its boundaries unclear. What distinguishes it is convergence. The Separation Machine is active again. A critical mass of Souls has accumulated. The Fairy Queen returns as the last elven-derived survivor, but not through an ordinary human resurrection: she is held by quasi-Soul, Memory and contract, a process the Machine can sustain without making her whole. The age therefore begins with an impossible person already carrying the flaw of the system that restored her.
The Dark Lord is the other half of that flaw. He is not simply an enemy king who appears because the plot requires evil. The source describes him as the Fairy Queen's shadow, the price of the bargain, an ontological counterform stored in the Machine. The Machine can return or preserve what has passed through Soul and Will, but every return can produce a shadow, double or antithesis. The Fifth Era turns that technical limitation into geopolitics: the Fairy gathers sacrifice through order and gold; the Dark Lord gathers monsters and sleeping forces through negation and revolt.
Ancient Lords make the crisis larger than Gildglade. They belong to older balances and can survive in the human age only weakened, as if personal Time itself were an atmosphere hostile to them. The Dark Lord seeks their sarcophagi; hunters race to kill them before full awakening. Yet the victory is double-edged: a surviving Lord can end the age, while a slain Lord can release power that advances the Fairy Queen toward the Last Ritual. The correct tactical decision can therefore worsen the metaphysical situation.
This is why the Fifth Era is called the Turning rather than the End. Aurelion has suffered ends before. This moment is different because human Will, outsider "Clean Pages," the broken Machine and accumulated Soul make alteration possible from within the world. The old Tablets may not remain merely inherited law. For the first time, history is close enough to the machinery of existence to attempt an edit.
