Aurelion has no international referee. Crowns, temples, fleets, banks and magocracies delay war by lending one another money, ships, rituals and reasons to wait - while every one of them keeps a scenario for taking Gildglade apart.
War Deferred into Contracts
The diplomacy surrounding Velmir is not a system of stable alliances. It is a machine for postponing conflicts that nobody can yet afford to finish. The White Kings want the northern province obedient and the Golden heresy contained, but destroying Gildglade risks losing access to its Node, wealth and strategic buffer. The Empire of the Black Sun sees the same city as an altar that might be converted to its own doctrine. The Federation of Storm Cities sees a harbor whose gold can be carried or blockaded. The Dragon Bone Dynasty sees a laboratory built over ancient machinery. Three Coins sees collateral.
Because each power wants a different part of the same object, cooperation is common without becoming trust. The White Kings borrow from bankers they consider spiritually suspect. The Republic finances wars on competing sides so long as the signatures remain enforceable. The Federation sells maritime muscle to clients it may blockade next season. Dragon Bone expeditions arrive as scholarship and negotiate for laboratories. The Empire of the Black Sun despises commercial compromise while still buying what its temple economy cannot produce. Aurelion's international order is therefore held together by transactions between institutions that would often prefer one another abolished.
Gildglade survives inside this contradiction. The source explicitly states that all five major powers currently gain more from keeping the city alive - as source, arena, experiment or collateral - than from burning it immediately. That is not peace. Each has a red line that can turn usefulness into casus belli: a public mass ritual of the Fairy Queen, contaminated golden dust reaching southern ports, a Black Sun landing, a Dragon Bone "scientific" mission too close to the Node, a debt crisis that closes both credit and harbor, or living gold appearing openly in metropolitan markets.
The most characteristic weapon is therefore neither sword nor spell but conditional access. Bread can be withheld. Freight can be repriced. An oath can be rewritten. A port can be "protected" until protection becomes blockade. An Inquisitorial quarantine can become invasion without changing vocabulary. The attributed maxim of the basels is accurate enough to summarize the whole field: diplomacy is the art of postponing war until the postponement begins to pay interest.
