Magical Institutions
Aurelion has no neutral academy of magic. Each major power builds an institution around its own metaphysical access: the Inquisition suppresses, Gildglade accounts, the East remembers through bone, the Republic binds, and Storm guilds negotiate with the sea.
Power Becomes an Institution
Magical institutions are the point where metaphysics becomes government. Because Aurelion's schools are tied to sources, places and prices, no universal academy can train every practice in the same way. The White Ash Inquisition begins from the doctrine that magic is infection. Its tools - White Flame, Sterility Seals and Clean Blades - are organized around breaking, suppressing or sanitizing magical connections. Its hierarchy moves from ash novices who extinguish household charms to cleaners, Ash Blades, parchment editors who specialize in dangerous agreements and senior officers capable of maintaining large suppression fields.
Gildglade organizes magic through the Secret Council and the city's ritual economy. Access to artifacts and the Separation Node is political; gold, blood and theatre are accounted rather than merely studied. Low practitioners become actors and cashiers, Blood Accountants manage sacrifice and gold, illusion directors build deceptive districts, and the rare Council-level Mage can work at the synthesis of gold and stage close to the Node itself. The danger is institutional as much as magical: once the 'account' grows larger than the person keeping it, the practitioner can become another product of the system.
The eastern Bone Academies treat Memory as an engineering material. Bone-setters heal and apply small memory grafts, readers of remains divine, Memory Engineers create temporary skills and skeletal exoskeletons, and anatomants coordinate larger bone constructs. The Republic of Three Coins makes an equally coherent but opposite institution from contract. Banks-Temples employ oath clerks, fate notaries and Judges of Debt; at the highest level a banker-demonist can bind armies or cities through legal magic. A contract becomes powerful because law, finance and metaphysics all agree to treat the signature as Function.
The Storm Cities organize magic through guilds rather than central priesthood. Wave Singers work aboard ships, Storm Navigators guide fleets through dangerous weather, Heralds of the Sea call major storms, and the highest storm figures bargain directly with sea and weather. Other powers place ritual authority inside temples and military orders, especially the Black Sun hierarchy where sacrifice becomes state liturgy. Across every system the institution does more than teach spells. It decides who may pay the price, who owns the source, which failures are acceptable and how magical power becomes repeatable enough to govern with.
