Hypothesis: Purpose of the Separation Node
One source hypothesis makes the Separation Node far more than a failed machine: an elven-dwarven gateway built so consciousness could enter the Great Nothing and return intact, perhaps even to produce a third principle - freedom itself.
A Gateway Built to Return
The purpose hypothesis begins before the Node became a ruin. Elves and dwarves are cast as complementary engineers of an impossible passage. Apollo's elves wove a harmonic web around the pressure of the Great Nothing; Cybele's dwarves supplied material braces, mechanisms and formulas capable of holding that web under strain. Their shared project was a transition machine through which consciousness could enter non-being and return without losing itself. If a self could cross the abyss and come back intact, then survival would no longer depend on remaining inside either perfect harmony or perfect structure.
The source therefore calls the Node a cosmic sluice or artery between Being and Nothing. One branch of the hypothesis gives the project an even larger purpose: it was an incubator of freedom. The collision between order and absorption might generate a third term able to cross the boundary without obeying either one. Dionysus, principle of multiplicity, personal Time and Will, is then interpreted not as an unrelated visitor but as the outcome - intended or accidental - of the experiment. The Node would have created what its builders themselves lacked: the possibility of returning as someone who could choose.
The catastrophe turns that ambition inside out. Cybele finds the network and uses it as a route of intrusion. What elves believe is a web of law and dwarves believe is structural support becomes a bridge for the very force they are trying to contain. The Node collapses into an arena of incompatible principles. Reality ripples outward; elves dissolve into mirrors, ice and nature; dwarves become fixed inside machines; the Node burns out and sleeps. Yet the same catastrophe still produces Dionysus in the hypothesis, making success and failure impossible to separate.
Later additions describe what the broken system may still be doing. One model makes it a pendulum of eras that charges on greed, blood and catastrophe until it resets the world. Another makes it a damaged archive in which prior peoples survive as distorted records. A third calls it a black accounting system that registers sacrifice, greed, blood and Memory until the accumulated imbalance forces an update. A fourth treats it as the common mirror of Apollo, Cybele and Dionysus - a place capable of producing new divine principles. These are competing models, not four confirmed machine functions. Together they explain why both the Fairy Queen and the Dark Lord seek to use a mechanism that may be older, less obedient and more consequential than either of them.
